Guest Spotlight:
Jeff Dodd, Partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth
Jeff Dodd has 45 years of experience helping companies with their corporate, securities, intellectual property and technology transactions. His clients range in size from Fortune 50 companies to emerging businesses and startups. In his current role as Partner at Hunton Andrews Kurth, Jeff advises clients concerning their IP strategy and monetization programs, licensing and joint venture transactions and data security, privacy and protection issues. Jeff is also the co-author of Modern Licensing Law and Drafting Effective Contracts, a Member of the University of Houston Honors College Advisory Board, and a lifetime fellow in both the Texas Bar Foundation and Houston Bar Foundation.
Key Takeaways:
- When working with founders in Houston, Jeff and his team at Hunton Andrews Kurth focus on what he calls “being investor ready.” In a younger startup ecosystem like Houston, there aren’t as many established investors and exited founders as there might be in a more established startup city on the West Coast. The education process for these founders and their investors is heavily prioritized by Jeff when he’s working with these startups so that they understand all the tools at their disposal as they begin fundraising.
- Many firms, Hunton Andrews Kurth included, have what Jeff describes as a “startup package” for legal services and consultations. Alongside his work with established businesses and investors, Jeff dedicates time to helping startups who hold these packages with securing certain documents, preparing for initial growth as cheaply as possible, and discussing more complicated legal elements like intellectual property.
- Earlier in his career, Jeff was fortunate to work with an experienced mentor named Eddie Rodgers, who spent a majority of his career working with emerging businesses and venture related legal situations. Jeff saw firsthand the small but mighty Houston ecosystem then, and 40 years later, he believes that Houston has grown and become a major startup hub. Working with today’s founders, Jeff is excited and intrigued by the opportunities these emerging companies have to get funding, mentorship and customer opportunities through established competitions and venture studios.
